After Aduana Stars’ defeat to Asante Kotoko on April 23, 2023, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, their assistant coach, WO Tandoh, expressed concern about his players’ mentality.
Despite taking an early lead through Isaac Mintah in the 25th minute, Aduana Stars were unable to hold on and lost 2-1, further denting their hopes of winning the Ghana Premier League title for a third time.
Speaking about the match, WO Tandoh lamented his team’s failure to secure a victory, suggesting that some players became complacent after taking the lead.
He argued that Aduana Stars had 30 players on their roster, but only 10 were of sufficient quality and experience to compete in the league. The assistant coach indicated that the team was working to groom young players to contribute to Ghana football in the future.
“Our boys if any Aduana player hears this they shouldn’t say that their coach is shaming them they are from nowhere. 30 players at Aduana those from nowhere are many we have 10 quality experienced in the league and 20 out of that,” he said in an interview with Happy FM in Accra.
“So it is normal under my boss we are grooming players to make Ghana football. Our boys it gets to a point they become complacent leading by 1-0 then they relax they know that everything is fine.”
“It is the mindset of our players that when I am doing something and I lead I become complacent and take things easy and do what I can. Did you do what your leader told you to do? Did you do what the head coach told you to do?, ” he asked.
Despite losing the match, Aduana Stars remained at the top of the league table with 47 points, while Asante Kotoko were in fifth place with 42 points.
