George Afriyie, the President of Susubiribi Sporting Club, strongly believes that Ghanaian football needs to be saved from Kurt Okraku’s leadership ahead of the 2023 Ghana Football Association Elective Congress.
Mr. Afriyie, a former Vice President of the GFA who lost the elections to the incumbent Kurt Okraku in 2019, is now vying for the presidential position in the upcoming September election.
He contends that football in the country is deteriorating and is in urgent need of rescue as there has been no noticeable progress.
During an interview on Asempa FM, as reported by Footballghana.com, Afriyie emphasized that if action is not taken to rescue our sport from Kurt Okraku’s leadership, the situation will worsen over the next four years.
“It is the right time for me to contest for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidency and it is God who will determine who will win but looking at the direction where our football, four years from today, it will be worse.”
Afriyie expressed concern over the current state of Ghanaian football, where the national team struggles against teams like Comoros, Niger, and even Madagascar. He stressed that such results are not reflective of Ghana’s footballing status and called for an acknowledgment of the existing problems.
He continued, “Our game has gotten to a stage where we cannot beat Comoros, Niger and even Madagascar and if anybody doesn’t see anything wrong with that, then it is a problem.”
Afriyie concluded by asserting that it is imperative to rescue Ghanaian football from Kurt Okraku’s leadership because, in his view, Okraku has not delivered positive results.
“That is not our status and we must admit that there are problems. There are no proper documents and structures to run the game.
“If Kurt Okraku was doing a good job I would have been the first to praise him but what do we see?
“We must rescue our football from Kurt Okraku because he has failed,” he added.
The GFA Elective Congress is scheduled to take place in Tamale on September 27.
