Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has added his voice to the growing calls for home-based players to be given a chance to represent the Black Stars.
He believes that local players have the talent and capability to compete alongside their foreign-based counterparts if provided with the necessary confidence and support.
Speaking to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports during a session discussing the petition from the Save Ghana Football demonstrators, Appiah emphasized the importance of promoting homegrown talent in the national team.
“We need to give the local players the opportunity and the confidence to play for the national team,” Appiah stated. “During our time, there were certain key players, but we also had players like William Tiero who pushed us. We must ensure that we don’t allow foreign players to completely take over their positions.”
Appiah’s sentiments echo those of former international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, who recently called for more local representation in the Black Stars.
The national team has struggled in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with a 1-0 loss to Angola and a 1-1 draw against Niger. Ghana currently sits at the bottom of Group F with just one point, trailing Angola and Sudan.
