West Ham United manager David Moyes expressed disappointment as Mohammed Kudus played his final match for the club before heading to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with the Black Stars.
The 23-year-old, who has been stellar since joining in the summer, will join Ghana’s camp this weekend for AFCON preparations.
Despite Kudus’ significant contributions, including ten goals in 23 matches, Moyes urged other players to step up in his absence.
After the 2-0 win against Arsenal, Moyes stated, “It’s a brilliant start for us [to have the Club’s highest points tally at the halfway point of the season] and it’s another win,” said Moyes after the game.
“I just keep looking at the wins and it’s great that we can do that. We keep going and we want to build on it.
Moyes highlighted the importance of building on their successful season and emphasized the need for players to fill the void during Kudus’ absence.
“Unfortunately we’re probably going to lose Mo [Kudus] to the Africa Cup of Nations, so we’re going to need other players to step up. This is where we need to see players coming in, stepping up and keeping us going in that direction, because we’re going to need them badly.”
Ghana’s Black Stars, including Kudus, are set to open camp in Kumasi on January 2, gearing up for their Group B clashes against Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique in the upcoming AFCON, scheduled from January 13 to February 11, 2024.
