IF Elfsborg defender Terry Yegbe made his Black Stars debut on Monday in Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Niger during their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
The 23-year-old was handed a starting role in defence and showcased a composed and disciplined performance, demonstrating solid positioning and composure. Neither of Niger’s goals could be directly attributed to his actions.
However, Yegbe’s debut wasn’t without scrutiny. As one of the more experienced players in a lineup that featured three debutants, some expected him to take on a greater leadership role, particularly in organizing the defence during set-piece situations—a recurring weakness for the Black Stars throughout the qualifiers. Despite this, his young age and limited international experience suggest room for development and growth in this area.
Yegbe was substituted in the 79th minute, making way for Medeama SC defender Kamaradini Mamudu, who also earned his first Black Stars cap.
The game marked a low point for Ghana football, with the team finishing bottom of Group F and failing to qualify for AFCON 2025—a first since 2004. Nevertheless, Yegbe’s performance provides a glimmer of hope for the future of Ghana’s defensive line, as the team looks to rebuild after a disappointing campaign.
