Angola’s national team head coach, Pedro Gonçalves, has voiced his concerns about the subpar condition of the Baba Yara Stadium pitch ahead of their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
In an interview with Ghanasportspage.com, the Portuguese coach emphasized the importance of a well-maintained pitch for optimal player performance.
Gonçalves, recalling Angola’s previous visit to Kumasi, acknowledged the passionate atmosphere but expressed worry over the current state of the playing surface.
“Everyone who has seen the news about the pitch will be concerned. The last time we played in Kumasi, we lost the match, but the atmosphere was incredible. The fans were not on our side, but it was an exciting experience. However, I am genuinely worried about the pitch this time. I understand that people are working hard to restore it, and it’s crucial because both teams like to play football. Ghana has players competing at the highest level, so we need a good pitch for a fair game,” Gonçalves stated.
Ghana is scheduled to face Angola on September 5th and Niger on September 9th as part of the qualifiers for the 2025 AFCON.
