Legendary Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien paid a visit to the Black Stars camp ahead of their upcoming match against Trinidad and Tobago in the Unity Cup tournament.
Essien, who enjoyed a distinguished career with clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan, was warmly received by the team. He met with the technical staff, including head coach Otto Addo—his former Black Stars teammate—and vice chairman of the management committee Stephen Appiah. Essien also interacted with the players, many of whom look up to him as a national icon.
The Black Stars are aiming to bounce back after a 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in their opening match on Wednesday. One of the bright sparks in that game was 19-year-old Caleb Yirenkyi, who put in an impressive second-half performance. Yirenkyi currently plays under Essien’s guidance at Danish club FC Nordsjaelland, where the Ghanaian legend is part of the coaching setup.
Ghana will hope to restore some pride when they take on Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday.
Since retiring from professional football in 2021, Essien has transitioned into coaching, continuing to share his experience and passion for the game with the next generation.
