The halftime break extended for about an hour as the fog persisted, and the referee halted play twice in the second half, concluding the match after 15 minutes of stoppage time. The game took place at El Abdi Stadium in the port city of El Jadida on the Atlantic coast of Morocco.
Ethiopia, along with 16 other African teams, is holding home matches in other countries due to a lack of stadiums meeting international standards.
In another match, Equatorial Guinea secured a 1-0 victory over Namibia as the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup kicked off. Emilio Nsue scored in the 67th minute after receiving a cross from Iban Salvador in Malabo.
Congo defeated Mauritania 2-0 in Kinshasa, while Rwanda held Zimbabwe to a 0-0 draw in Butare, Rwanda. Yoane Wissa and Théo Bongonda scored for Congo. Zimbabwe, playing for the first time since its FIFA ban was lifted in July, aimed for a fresh start under Brazilian-born coach Baltemar Brito.
