2026 World Cup Q: Equatorial Guinea vs Namibia Preview

The road to the 2026 World Cup commences for both Equatorial Guinea and Namibia with an encounter at Nuevo Estadio de Malabo on Wednesday afternoon.

The sides head into this one currently on a contrasting run of results, but the clash promises to be a keenly-contested affair nonetheless.

Match preview

Equatorial Guinea played out a goalless stalemate against Burkina Faso when the teams faced off in an international friendly encounter on October 13.

Despite being in the ascendancy for large spells of the contest, Juan Micha’s men were unable to get the all-important goal that their dominance perhaps merited.

Consequently, the Elephants are now unbeaten in seven straight matches dating back to September 2022, picking up three wins and four draws.

Next up is the task of facing off against an opposing outfit who is currently 23 places below in the latest FIFA ranking of all national teams.

Having not lost a home game in nearly two years, Wednesday’s hosts will heavily back themselves to get their World Cup qualifying journey off to a winning start in front of their fans.

Namibia was involved in a second straight 0-0 draw as they held the Bafana Bafana of South Africa to a share of the spoils on September 9.

Collin Benjamin’s men showed great resolve and put on a highly-spirited display to avoid defeat in what was a largely one-sided affair at the Orlando Stadium.

However, the Braves Warriors are now winless in five matches on the spin and boast just one win from seven outings since the turn of the year.

In the first of their final two competitive matches before the Africa Cup of Nations takes center stage, Wednesday’s visitors could really do with an upturn in form as they make the journey to Malabo.

Team News

Equatorial Namibia midfielder Pedro Obiang remains sidelined with a muscle problem which has seen him fail to feature since early November.

Leading goalscorer Emilio Nsue has scored three times in his last six starts at club level and will be looking to deliver the goods for the home side.

Veteran Peter Shalulile retains his place in the 26-man squad as he aims to extend his lead at the top of Namibia’s all-time scoring charts.

Lloyd Kazapua is back in contention for the away side for the first time in eight months, but it remains to be seen if the 34-year-old will make an immediate return to the starting XI.
