Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has clarified his strategy for player selection ahead of the pivotal 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola, emphasizing that his focus is on selecting the best talent, regardless of whether they are local or foreign-based players.
“For me it is never about local or non local it is about the best players but if we can find good players and that is why I said it before I want to really really try and watch as much local live matches as possible,” Addo said in an interview. He highlighted his commitment to identifying top talent from Ghana’s domestic league, noting that he intends to watch as many live local matches as possible.
“I can find one or two players because it is always very difficult from videos. Now I have the possibility, because I am not with Dortmund anymore, to watch a lot of matches. If I find someone who I think is better than another player, then why not?” Addo explained.
In his recently announced 23-man squad for the upcoming qualifiers, Addo included just one domestic player, Asante Kotoko’s goalkeeper Frederick Asare. The team began their preparations with a training session at the Accra Sports Stadium before traveling to Kumasi to continue their buildup.
Ghana is set to face Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5, followed by a crucial match against Niger in Morocco on September 9, as they aim to secure a spot in the AFCON tournament.
