Niger 2-0 Ghana: Five things we learned from Black Galaxies exit in CHAN 2022

After a valiant effort from the Black Galaxies all tournament, their journey has come to an end thanks to a 2-0 defeat to Niger.

Konadu Yiadom turned the ball into his own net in the first half and Hainikoye scored a belter to make it two.

Otu found the net for Ghana but it was ruled out for an earlier foul.

Here are five things we learned.

Niger thoroughly deserved the victory

In each game, the little details matter a lot and Niger got those little details right. They showed more intent in the first half and were rewarded with a much-needed first goal.

Ghana increased the pressure but an important moment got the second goal for the Group E winners.

Ghana were not expected to make it this far. Now they can go home.

The team missed Barnieh

When Daniel Afriyie Barnieh received a red card in Ghana’s 3-1 win over Sudan, a number of fans had their hearts in their mouth and for good reason.

The former Hearts of Oak man was instrumental to Ghana’s qualification and is seen as a key player for Annor Walker’s men.

Maybe, just maybe, Ghana could have dragged the game further with the 21-year-old on the pitch.

Defending a serious issue

Throughout Ghana’s run in this competition, the defenders have left little to be desired.

In the first game against Madagascar, two major defensive errors decided the game. Against Sudan, the defenders went to sleep as the Falcons passed themselves to goal.

Against Niger, it was more of the same as Konadu Yiadom turned the ball into his own net. The coaching staff has to work on defensive partnerships and movements in the future.

Niger the wildcard in this tournament

In three games played, Niger have conceded a grand total of zero goals. Now that’s no small feat in a tournament setting.

They were seen as underdogs going into the competition and now have solidified themselves as a real threat to favorites Algeria for the title.

Algeria won’t have to wait long to face them in the semis, but should be wary of the threat.

Kofi Kordzi not the solution upfront

The former Hearts of Oak man was expected to provide goals as the spearhead of the attack for Ghana.

It’s safe to say that Annor Walker’s faith was not repaid. Kordzi has been poor throughout the tournament, leaving fans questioning why he was still being used.

A new marksman has to be found for when the Black Galaxies play again.
