Prosper Harrison Addo, the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has announced plans to enhance infrastructure in Ghana by constructing a modern pitch capable of hosting both local and international matches.
This decision comes in response to the concerns raised by numerous football enthusiasts in the country regarding the poor quality of pitches used in the Ghana Premier League and lower-tier competitions, among others.
However, Addo acknowledged that the primary obstacle to implementing such a project is the cost involved. He explained that acquiring resources like suitable land in urban areas poses a significant challenge to their plans.
“The plans are already in place, and once we secure the necessary resources, we will proceed with the project. Similar to the development at Prampram, we are also constructing several fields there,” he stated during an interview with Asempa FM.
He further elaborated, “Sometimes, the issue is not just about money but also about finding suitable land. The cost of securing land in Greater Accra has been expensive, so we have to manage the fields that are currently available.”
“For example, the McDan Park is being heavily utilized by football teams due to the lack of alternatives. This leads to football matches taking place throughout the day at the same venue. Additionally, reducing the number of teams in competitions could alleviate some of the burden on the existing fields, but that also presents its own challenges,” Addo added.
He emphasized that the funds received from FIFA cannot be exclusively allocated to stadium construction, as there are other pressing issues in Ghanaian football that require financial attention as well.
