‘It’s my responsibility to build this team’ – Black Stars boss Chris Hughton

Chris Hughton, the head coach of the Black Stars, has emphasized that it is his duty to rebuild the team following their resounding defeat to the USA.

The four-time African champions suffered a devastating 4-0 loss at the Geodis Park in an international friendly on Wednesday.

After the match, Hughton, drawing from his extensive experience in the game, expressed his belief in the team’s ability to bounce back and achieve positive results, even after such discouraging losses to Mexico and the US.

“It is my responsibility to build this team. I have to work around some of the issues we’ve always had regards some players missing from the squad, trying to get consistency in the team and we will continue to strive to get the right formulas,” he told the press.

“I’ve also been involved in the game long enough to know that sometimes you go through what we regard as bad periods to come out better.”

In Wednesday’s game, the USA took the lead in the 10th minute through Giovanni Reyna, who capitalized on a poor clearance, followed by Christian Pulisic adding the second from the spot after a Gideon Mensah penalty.

The USA’s Florian Balogun was then handed the third goal due to another series of defensive lapses in the 22nd minute.

Ghana conceded the fourth goal in the 39th minute through a well-executed indirect free kick converted by Reyna for his brace.

Chris Hughton and his team will be aiming to return to winning ways as they kick off their 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros in November.
