Ghanaian utility player Aaron Opoku was instrumental in Kaiserslautern’s 2-1 victory over Ingolstadt in the first round of the DFB Pokal on Saturday.
Opoku made an early impact, delivering a perfectly timed through ball to set up Jannik Mause for the opening goal in the 3rd minute.
The match, held at Stadion am Bruchweg, saw Kaiserslautern control much of the possession, while Ingolstadt managed to create more shots on goal. Opoku played the entire match, demonstrating his defensive and offensive versatility. Fellow German-born Ghanaian players, including defender Jan Gyamerah and striker Ragnar Ache, also took the field for Kaiserslautern, while attacker Richmond remained on the bench.
Mause doubled Kaiserslautern’s lead in the 35th minute by converting a set piece. Although Ingolstadt’s Ryan Malone scored with a header in the 88th minute, Kaiserslautern maintained their lead to secure the win. This victory enhances Kaiserslautern’s head-to-head record against Ingolstadt to 5 wins, 3 losses, and 6 draws.
Kaiserslautern now shifts their focus to their upcoming Bundesliga 2 fixture against Preussen Münster on August 24th.
