Otto Addo is doing well as the Black Stars coach – Samuel Aboabire despite AFCON failure

Samuel Aboabire, a member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council, has come to the defense of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, insisting he is doing a commendable job despite growing calls for his dismissal.

Addo, 47, was reappointed in March 2024 on a three-year contract with an option to extend for two more years. However, his tenure has faced significant backlash following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Stars endured a dismal campaign, finishing last in Group F with just three points after six matches. The team recorded three losses and three draws in a group featuring Angola, Sudan, and Niger. This marks the first time in 20 years that the four-time African champions will miss the AFCON, which will be hosted in Morocco next year.

Despite the disappointment, Aboabire maintains that Addo’s performance has been notable, pointing to challenges with goal-scoring as the primary issue.
“Otto Addo is doing well as the Black Stars coach, just that goal-scoring has been the team’s problem,” Aboabire stated in an interview with Onua TV.

Following the AFCON qualification failure, the GFA Executive Council held a lengthy meeting with Addo to review his technical report. While a final decision is yet to be announced, multiple reports suggest that Addo is likely to retain his position.

The Black Stars will have an opportunity to redeem themselves when they face Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March. Fans will be looking for significant improvements as the team aims to restore its reputation on the international stage.
