Birmingham City are reportedly leading the race to sign Ghanaian winger Kwame Poku from Peterborough United this summer, with the League One side already preparing for life without one of their standout performers.
Poku, 23, enjoyed an impressive campaign with Darren Ferguson’s side, including a notable strike against Birmingham in their 2-1 defeat at the Weston Homes Stadium. Just days later, he featured as Peterborough clinched the Vertu Motors Trophy at Wembley, further underlining his value.
The former Colchester United winger, who joined Peterborough in 2021, is out of contract this summer. While the Posh have tabled a new offer in hopes of retaining him, it appears increasingly likely that Poku will depart before the 2024/25 season begins in August.
Because Poku will still be under 24 at the time of his likely move, any club that signs him will be required to pay a compensation fee to Peterborough. If an agreement cannot be reached, the amount will be set by a tribunal. For Peterborough, competition for the player’s signature could significantly increase the final fee.
Despite battling injuries throughout the season, Poku delivered an impressive return of 12 goals and 11 assists in 31 appearances—a goal contribution every 1.4 matches.
With multiple clubs circling, including Birmingham City, Poku is set to be one of the most sought-after talents in the EFL this summer.
