Head coach of Ghana’s Black Queens, Kim Lars Björkegren, has praised his players after their impressive 4-1 victory over Tanzania secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The win, recorded on Monday, July 14, was enough to push Ghana into second place in Group C, confirming their progression to the knockout stage of the competition being held in Morocco.
It was a remarkable turnaround for the Queens, who had a rocky start to the tournament. They suffered a 2-0 defeat to defending champions South Africa and were held to a 1-1 draw by Mali in their second game.
Speaking to CAF Media after the crucial win, Björkegren expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance and commended them for sticking to their style of play.
“Ghana missed out on the knockout stage the last time they participated in 2018 as hosts, but this time we’ve made it through,” the Swiss tactician stated. “This result means a lot to us. The players truly deserve this moment. They believed in the process, followed the game plan, and delivered when it mattered most.”
Ghana will now turn their attention to the quarter-final clash with Algeria, scheduled for Saturday, July 19. The match will kick off at 17:00 GMT at the same venue.
