Ghanaian striker Caleb Ekuban emerged the hero as Genoa CFC staged a thrilling comeback to defeat US Sassuolo 2-1 at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Introduced in the second half, Ekuban made a decisive impact when it mattered most, scoring the winning goal in the 84th minute. The forward reacted sharply to a precise pass from Junior Messias, calmly steering the ball home to send the home fans into celebration.
Genoa had earlier taken the lead through Ruslan Malinovskyi, who finished off a well-worked move after being set up by Tommaso Baldanzi in a bright opening spell.
However, Sassuolo responded strongly after the break and found an equaliser in the 57th minute, with Ismaël Koné getting on the scoresheet to set up a tense and competitive finale.
With momentum shifting, Genoa pushed forward in search of a winner, and the introduction of Messias and Ekuban proved crucial. The duo injected energy into the attack and ultimately combined to decisive effect late in the game.
Ekuban’s goal capped a solid individual campaign in the 2025/26 Serie A season, with the 32-year-old now registering four goals and one assist in 27 league appearances.
The victory provides a timely boost for Genoa following a mixed run of results and keeps them looking up the table. They will next face Pisa SC on Sunday, April 19, with Ekuban eager to build on his match-winning performance.
