German-born defender Jan Gyamerah made his long-awaited debut for the Ghana national football team in their 2-0 defeat against Mexico national football team in an international friendly played as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced full-back was handed a starting role in what marked his first-ever appearance for the senior national team, as Ghana’s technical handlers continue to assess players ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Despite the defeat, Gyamerah delivered a disciplined and composed performance at the back, showing signs of confidence and maturity against a strong Mexican side playing in front of their home supporters.
The defender remained solid throughout large parts of the game, helping Ghana withstand several attacking waves from the hosts while also trying to contribute to the team’s build-up play from defense.
According to match statistics from Flashscore, the 30-year-old earned a rating of 6.0 after completing almost the entire game before being substituted in the 90th minute for Ebenezer Adade.
Gyamerah’s inclusion is seen as an important addition to Ghana’s defensive setup as the Black Stars continue fine-tuning their squad ahead of the FIFA World Cup. His versatility, experience, and tactical awareness could provide the team with another dependable option in defense.
The former Germany youth international recently secured promotion to the German Bundesliga with Elversberg and is expected to play top-flight football next season, a development that could further strengthen his chances of making Ghana’s final World Cup squad.
Saturday’s friendly also gave the technical team another opportunity to evaluate several players against high-level opposition as preparations intensify toward the global football showpiece.
With competition for places in the Black Stars squad becoming increasingly fierce, Gyamerah’s debut performance may have boosted his hopes of earning a place in the final team to be announced ahead of the tournament.
The Black Stars are expected to continue their preparations in the coming weeks before naming the official squad for the World Cup.
