Black Stars captain and forward has firmly dismissed suggestions that his long-standing place in Ghana’s national team is the result of his famous family background, insisting that his achievements have come through hard work, consistency, and performance on the pitch.
The 34-year-old striker, whose father is Ghana football legend , has been a prominent figure in the Black Stars setup for more than a decade. Since making his senior national team debut in September 2010, Ayew has established himself as one of Ghana’s most dependable players, featuring in major international tournaments and contributing significantly to the team’s successes over the years.
Despite his longevity and experience, Ayew has often found himself under intense scrutiny from sections of Ghanaian football supporters. Critics have occasionally questioned his performances and, at times, suggested that his family connections may have played a role in securing his place in the national team.
However, speaking candidly in an interview with GFA Media ahead of Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Black Stars skipper rejected those claims and explained that carrying a famous surname has often brought additional pressure rather than advantages.
“When people say that [my father is the reason I’m there], it makes me laugh because for me it’s even harder,” Ayew said.
The veteran attacker noted that being the son of one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers means he is constantly judged against expectations that many other players do not face. According to him, people often overlook the effort and sacrifices he has made throughout his career and instead focus on his family background.
“You always have that perception that it’s because of his father, because of his uncle…At the end of the day, you can say all that, but football doesn’t lie on the grass.”
Ayew emphasized that football remains a performance-based sport where players ultimately prove themselves through their contributions on the field. He believes that his record over the years speaks for itself and that maintaining a place in the national team for such a long period would not have been possible without consistently delivering when called upon.
The former Leicester City forward acknowledged that criticism is an unavoidable part of professional football. Nevertheless, he stressed the importance of maintaining confidence and remaining focused, especially during difficult periods when performances are being questioned.
“We are allowed to criticise, but at the end of the day you need to keep your head straight and do what you do best and have self belief because it’s not easy.”
Ayew further revealed that mental toughness has been one of the key factors behind his ability to remain at the highest level for so many years. He advised young footballers to develop resilience and learn how to handle pressure, criticism, and setbacks.
“You just need to know how to deal with those moments and to have thick skin because football is not easy,” he added.
As captain of the Black Stars, Ayew now has his sights firmly set on leading Ghana to a successful campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The four-time African champions are preparing for what will be their fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
Ghana has been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside , and . The group presents a stern test for the Black Stars, who will be aiming to advance to the knockout stages and make a strong statement on the global stage.
