Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz is considering handing highly-rated youngster Caleb Yirenkyi a starting role in the Black Stars’ opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Panama following the absence of Thomas Partey.
The experienced midfielder has been ruled out of the Group L encounter in Toronto after being unable to secure entry into Canada, forcing Queiroz to rethink his plans in the heart of midfield.
Among the options available to the Portuguese tactician, Yirenkyi has emerged as a strong contender after producing a series of impressive performances during Ghana’s preparations for the tournament.
The 20-year-old FC Nordsjælland midfielder boosted his chances of earning a place in the starting lineup after delivering an eye-catching performance in Ghana’s pre-World Cup friendly victory over Wales. The youngster marked his senior debut with a goal and impressed with his energy, confidence and ability to influence play from midfield.
His dynamic style, intelligent movement and composure in possession have reportedly caught the attention of the technical team, making him a realistic option to fill the void left by Partey’s absence.
Should he be selected, Yirenkyi is likely to operate alongside either Kwasi Sibo or Elisha Owusu in midfield as Ghana seek the right blend of creativity, defensive balance and control against Panama.
Sibo offers strength, work rate and ball-winning qualities, while Owusu brings valuable international experience, tactical awareness and distribution, giving Queiroz multiple options ahead of the crucial fixture.
Despite being one of the youngest members of the squad, Yirenkyi has demonstrated remarkable maturity and confidence, attributes that could earn him a place in one of Ghana’s most important matches of the tournament.
The Black Stars see the opening game against Panama as a key fixture in their quest to advance from a challenging group that also includes England and Croatia.
With Partey unavailable, Yirenkyi now stands on the brink of a career-defining moment as he looks to seize his opportunity and establish himself on football’s biggest stage.
