World Cup 2026: Agyemang-Badu backs Semenyo to lead Ghana’s charge

Former Black Stars midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has backed Antoine Semenyo to play a leading role in Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With Ghana drawn in a challenging Group L alongside Croatia, England and Panama, expectations have increased on the Bournemouth forward following the injury setback to Mohammed Kudus and concerns over captain Jordan Ayew’s recent form.

Agyemang-Badu, who earned 78 caps for the Black Stars, believes Semenyo possesses the qualities needed to spearhead Ghana’s attack and help the team progress from the group stage.

“He is our poster boy… he has been with a great coach, and he has given him ample time to do whatever he wants on the pitch,” Badu told Pan Africa Football.

“And that’s why we have to use him. He needs a bit of space so that he can progress the ball very well because he is good with both legs. He is very strong on the ball and a very intelligent player.”

The former midfielder also urged Ghanaians to allow Semenyo to play without undue pressure.

“For now, we will rely on him without any pressure. He should come and enjoy his football and help us qualify from the group without pressure.”

Ghana opened their World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 17 and will face England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding their Group L fixtures against Croatia on June 27.

The Black Stars are hoping to reach the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since their historic quarter-final appearance in 2010.
