Black Stars midfielder Kwesi Sibo says Ghana’s hard-fought goalless draw against England has delivered a major psychological lift ahead of their final Group L fixture.
Carlos Queiroz’s side produced a disciplined and compact performance against the highly rated Three Lions, executing a rigid tactical plan that effectively neutralised England’s attacking threat. The result sees Ghana remain level at the top of Group L with four points, placing them within touching distance of a historic qualification for the Round of 32.
Sibo, who delivered an industrious display in central midfield protecting the back line, said the performance against elite European opposition has reinforced the team’s belief in their capabilities.
Rather than viewing the result as an opportunity missed, the Real Oviedo midfielder believes it is the ideal platform heading into their decisive final group match.
“I think we did our best to get the results we were hoping for,” Sibo said. “It was the plan of the coach and we followed the plan. It’s a great motivation for us to fight for the next game. Playing against a tough national team like England and getting such results is a big motivation for us.”
The draw also extends Ghana’s impressive World Cup record of never losing their second group-stage match across five tournament appearances.
With momentum building inside the camp, the Black Stars now head into their final group fixture full of confidence, knowing qualification is firmly within their grasp and they are capable of competing with the world’s best.
