Newly appointed Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler has set his sights on building a competitive side capable of challenging for trophies in Ghana and across Africa.
The South African tactician was officially unveiled as the new head coach of the Porcupine Warriors ahead of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, replacing the club’s previous technical leadership.
Speaking in his first interview with the club, Tinkler expressed his excitement about joining one of Africa’s most decorated football institutions and promised to create a team that matches Kotoko’s rich history and ambitions.
“I am honoured and excited to join one of Africa’s most storied football institutions. Asante Kotoko’s rich history, passion for success and ambition for development are not hidden in Africa,” Tinkler said.
“I look forward to working with the players, staff and management to build a team that can compete and win, both at home and on the continental stage.
“I feel proud to be associated with this great club at this historical moment.”
The experienced coach arrives at the Baba Yara Stadium with an impressive CV, having managed some of South Africa’s biggest clubs, including Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Cape Town City, Maritzburg United and Bidvest Wits.
During his coaching career, Tinkler guided Orlando Pirates to the CAF Champions League final and led SuperSport United to the CAF Confederation Cup final. He has also won major domestic honours, including the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout trophies.
Before moving into management, Tinkler enjoyed a successful playing career. The former midfielder captained South Africa and earned 48 international appearances, representing Bafana Bafana at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and helping the country win the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.
At club level, he gained valuable European experience with spells in England, Italy and Portugal, including appearances for Barnsley and Cagliari.
