ENGLAND: Ghanaian winger Abdul Fatawu made his competitive debut for Ipswich Town as the newly promoted club began their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Portman Road.
Fatawu was named in the starting lineup and featured for 66 minutes before being substituted as Ipswich held on to claim maximum points.
The 22-year-old joined Ipswich from Leicester City on July 21, 2026, signing a five-year contract in a transfer reportedly worth an initial £20 million.
He gave an encouraging account of himself on his first Premier League appearance for Ipswich, completing all three of his attempted dribbles, creating one big chance and producing two key passes.
Ipswich broke the deadlock in the 24th minute after Julio Enciso intercepted a Sunderland pass before setting up fellow new signing Emersonn, who calmly finished from close range.
Sunderland restored parity six minutes before the interval when Nilson Angulo curled a free-kick beyond the Ipswich goalkeeper.
However, Ipswich secured the victory deep into stoppage time. Former Sunderland winger Jack Clarke found the decisive goal in the 90th minute, sending a low effort into the far corner.
The result gives Ipswich an ideal beginning to their return to England’s top flight after they finished second in the Championship last season.
Fatawu will now be hoping to build on his promising debut and establish himself as an important player for Ipswich during their Premier League campaign.
