Berekum West Member of Parliament Dickson Kyere-Duah has called for the complete demolition and reconstruction of the Accra Sports Stadium, arguing that the current facility is no longer suitable for hosting major international competitions.
The lawmaker made the comments after touring the stadium to assess its condition ahead of Ghana’s preparations to host the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
Kyere-Duah admitted that the stadium often looks impressive during floodlit matches but said a closer inspection reveals serious structural and maintenance challenges that require urgent attention.
“When you come here on match days, especially matches that are played under floodlights, you see the place being so magnificent. But when you take a deep tour, you realise we have a very long way to go,” he said.
The MP believes spending money on repeated renovations will only provide temporary solutions and has urged authorities to consider replacing the entire facility with a modern stadium that meets FIFA and CAF standards.
“We should be thinking about replacing this facility entirely, pulling everything down and building a modern stadium that befits the status of Ghana’s capital, Accra,” he added.
Kyere-Duah described the situation as urgent, insisting that Ghana needs a world-class sporting venue capable of hosting major international events.
The Accra Sports Stadium, one of Ghana’s most historic sporting grounds, has hosted several domestic and international matches over the years. However, concerns about its ageing infrastructure have increased as the country prepares for upcoming football commitments, including the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
