Greifswalder FC have announced the signing of 18-year old Ghanaian center forward Gibson Adu. He joins the club from FC Bayern Munich‘s reserve team. He has signed a two-year contract with an option for a third season.
Born in Mainz, Adu began playing football at SC Lerchenberg before joining the youth academy of FSV Mainz 05. From there, he moved to the U17 team of SpVgg Unterhaching in 2022, where he made his debut in the 3. Liga just three days after his 16th birthday. Within the last 14 matchdays, Adu made ten substitute appearances and, with his goal against VfB Lübeck, became the youngest goalscorer in Unterhaching’s club history. He was 16 years, one month, and 30 days old at the time.
He was later transferred to FC Bayern Munich, but in the following years, he was loaned out twice to Unterhaching and once to SCR Altach in Austria.
“With Gibson, we’ve pulled off a transfer that’s anything but a given for a regional league club. His footballing quality speaks for itself. He possesses exceptional potential and has already demonstrated at a very young age the level at which he can compete. Of course, we’re also aware of his past and know that things haven’t always gone perfectly,” said Sporting Director Matthias Rahn.
He added: “That’s precisely why we thoroughly investigated him beforehand and held many open discussions. Ultimately, what mattered most to us was the impression Gibson makes on us today and the path he wants to take. We’re convinced that Greifswald can be the perfect place for him to refocus entirely on football.
“We’re giving him our trust, a clear sporting perspective, and clear expectations. He now needs to seize this opportunity. If Gibson combines his quality with the necessary discipline, mentality, and daily work ethic, I’m convinced he can be a game-changer for us. And we’re equally confident that we can help him take the next important step in his career,”
Gibson Adu, however, expressed his excitement after completing the transfer, saying: “Joining GFC is the best possible decision for me. The team is young, fresh, and hungry. I want to play as much as possible and contribute goals and assists.”
With Gibson Adu, an incredibly experienced and highly talented attacking player, just 18 years old, is joining Greifswald. His qualities are undeniable, and we’re really looking forward to seeing him on the pitch.
