Bechem United president Kingsley Owusu Achau has delivered a candid assessment of the Ghana Premier League, admitting he would rather watch El Clasico than a domestic league match if both games were played at the same time.
The football administrator believes the Ghanaian top flight is struggling to capture the interest of supporters, citing a lack of excitement and the overall appeal of the competition.
Speaking in an interview with Hot FM, Owusu Achau said the Ghana Premier League must become more entertaining if it is to compete for the attention of local football fans.
“I would rather watch El Clasico than a local match when they are playing at the same time; the local league is not attractive,” he said.
His comments reflect the challenges facing Ghana’s top-flight competition, which has battled declining attendances, competition from Europe’s elite leagues and concerns over scheduling, marketing and the overall matchday experience.
The widespread availability of European football on television has also made it increasingly difficult for the Ghana Premier League to retain the attention of supporters, with blockbuster fixtures such as Real Madrid versus Barcelona often taking precedence among local fans.
Owusu Achau’s remarks are likely to reignite debate about the steps needed to improve the image and competitiveness of the domestic league, including enhancing the quality of football, stadium experience, officiating and promotional efforts.
Despite his criticism of the competition, the Bechem United president will now turn his focus to on-field matters as his side prepares for Matchday 10 of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League.
The Hunters will welcome FC Samartex to the Nana Gyeabour Park this weekend, where they will be aiming to secure all three points in front of their home supporters as they continue their league campaign.
