Al Ahly, the Egyptian giants, have secured their spot in the 2022/23 CAF Super Cup following their triumph in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League on Sunday.
With their record-breaking 11th TotalEnergies CAF Champions League title, Al Ahly has earned their place in the CAF Super Cup, which will be held at a later date.
In the upcoming match, they will aim to make history once again as they face off against Algeria’s USM Alger, the winners of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
Having claimed the Super Cup trophy eight times already, Al Ahly stands as the most successful team in this single-leg competition.
Their most recent victories came in the 2021 and 2021-22 seasons. Out of their 10 previous Super Cup appearances, Al Ahly has only failed to win twice, in 1994 and 2015.
On the other hand, USM Alger will be competing for their first-ever Super Cup title in their debut appearance. The Algerian team secured their first Confederation Cup title just last week, and they are eagerly anticipating the chance to add another prestigious trophy to their collection.
USM Alger will strive to become the second Algerian team, following ES Setif, to claim the Super Cup. ES Setif achieved this feat by defeating Al Ahly on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time during the 2015 season.
