Ghanaian internationals Andre Ayew and Denis Odoi are set to become free agents this summer after NAC Breda confirmed they will not activate the unilateral extension options in the contracts of both players following the club’s relegation from the Eredivisie.
The Dutch club announced the decision ahead of the May 15, 2026 deadline, meaning both experienced players will leave the Rat Verlegh Stadion when their current deals expire at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.
Ayew and Odoi had each signed one-year contracts with an option for an additional season, but NAC have opted against extending their stays after a difficult campaign that ended with relegation to the Keuken Kampioen Divisie.
Odoi, 37, made 19 appearances for NAC after joining on a free transfer in November 2025 during a period when the club was struggling with defensive injuries. The versatile defender brought leadership, experience, and stability to the backline, while also serving as an influential figure in the dressing room.
Despite his efforts, NAC were unable to avoid relegation as their season gradually unravelled.
Ayew, 36, arrived in January to strengthen the club’s attack and went on to make 16 appearances in the famous yellow and black colours. The former Ghana captain scored once during his spell, finding the net in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Feyenoord Rotterdam.
However, the experienced forward struggled to consistently deliver the goals needed to help NAC survive in the Dutch top flight.
The club’s relegation was confirmed earlier this month in chaotic circumstances during their final home fixture against SC Heerenveen, a match that was abandoned after supporters repeatedly threw flares and fireworks onto the pitch with NAC trailing 2-0.
Attention now turns to what lies ahead for both Ghanaian veterans.
For Odoi, the decision could revolve around whether to continue playing professionally or bring an end to a long and accomplished career in European football.
Ayew, meanwhile, faces a more complicated situation as speculation about a possible return to the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has cooled following his inconsistent form in the Netherlands.
With both players now approaching the closing stages of their careers, retirement may soon become a realistic option for the two experienced Ghana internationals.
