Former Black Galaxies and Great Olympics coach, Annor Walker, has shared the story of how he discovered Black Stars’ No.1 goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, during his early playing days.
Walker recalled first noticing Asare’s talent while he was playing for Sporting Mirren. Impressed by his abilities, Walker personally approached the young shot-stopper and encouraged him to join Great Olympics, where he was coaching at the time.
Despite financial struggles at the club, Walker remained committed to supporting Asare’s growth. Speaking in an interview with Takoradi-based Oil City Radio, he explained his determination to help the young goalkeeper succeed.
“There were financial challenges, but I told him I would support him,” he revealed.
Walker went as far as assisting Asare with transportation after training sessions, highlighting his dedication to nurturing the goalkeeper’s potential.
Reflecting on Asare’s rise to becoming Ghana’s No.1 goalkeeper, Walker attributed his success to perfect timing.
“We always say God’s time is the best, so I believe this is the right time for Benjamin Asare,” he stated.
Asare’s Rise to Black Stars No.1
Asare, who now plays for Hearts of Oak, has received widespread praise following his impressive performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, keeping clean sheets in both matches.
Following his standout displays, Black Stars coach Otto Addo confirmed that Benjamin Asare will remain the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. He is now expected to retain his position in Ghana’s upcoming matches against Chad and Mali in September as the World Cup qualifiers continue.
