Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku has received a call-up to the senior national team, the Black Stars, ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup in the United Kingdom. This marks his second invitation to the national side, having first featured under former coach C.K Akonnor in 2021.
Opoku has not played for Ghana since his initial appearance, which came shortly before his move away from Kotoko. However, his impressive form in the second round of the Ghana Premier League has earned him a return to the national fold. The four-nation Unity Cup tournament will feature Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Currently the fourth-highest scorer in the Ghana Premier League with nine goals, Opoku’s latest brace against Dreams FC last weekend has further underlined his clinical form. His inclusion in the national team, though a personal milestone, is a significant blow to Kotoko’s title hopes as he is set to miss the remainder of the domestic season.
Ghana will open their Unity Cup campaign with a semifinal clash against long-time rivals Nigeria on May 28. The winner will advance to the final on May 31 to face either Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago at the Gtech Community Stadium in London.
The Black Stars are scheduled to begin camping in Accra on Sunday, May 25, ahead of the tournament. These matches will serve as key preparations for Ghana’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali in September.
