West Ham United forward Mohammed Kudus has called on African footballers to embrace and express their technical abilities when given the opportunity, rather than allowing themselves to be defined solely by physical traits.
Kudus made the remarks during a candid conversation with UK-based Ghanaian rapper Gunva B, where they discussed heritage, culture, and identity. Speaking to Premier League Productions, Kudus expressed concern about the way African players are frequently portrayed by commentators.
“Mostly, when African players are being described, it’s more about their physique, strength, and their speed,” Kudus noted. “In my eyes, I believe that we have skilful players. I would urge more African players to be who they are and enjoy their qualities.”
The 24-year-old Ghanaian highlighted former Manchester City star Yaya Toure as a prime example of a player whose technical brilliance was often overshadowed by emphasis on his physical presence.
“Yaya Toure was crazy, untouchable. He had more than pace and power,” Kudus said. “You need a lot of flair to be beating players. This league—everyone is strong and fast, so you need something special to stand out.”
Since joining West Ham from Ajax in 2023, Kudus has quickly become a fan favorite, earning praise for his dribbling skills and eye for goal.
Despite his individual brilliance, West Ham’s struggles have continued, with the Hammers falling 2-1 to Liverpool on Saturday. The defeat leaves them just outside the relegation zone with six matches remaining in the Premier League season.
