Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has called for unity and mutual trust within the national team as he continues to compete with four other goalkeepers for a place in Ghana’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Asare, who has often been Ghana’s first-choice shot-stopper, also reflected on a crucial mistake he made in the recent friendly defeat to Mexico, where an early error inside the opening two minutes led to the opposition’s first goal. The incident sparked debate about his position, but the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper insists he remains focused on bouncing back stronger.

“Football, we have to accept that mistakes do happen, but that does not mean it is the end of it because there are a lot of matches ahead,” Asare said ahead of Ghana’s friendly against Wales on June 2.

The goalkeeping department currently features strong competition, with five keepers in camp — Benjamin Asare, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Solomon Agbasi, Joseph Anang, and Paul Reverson — all fighting for just three places in the final 26-man squad expected to be announced on June 1.

Asare acknowledged the tactical adjustments within the team, especially under a new goalkeeping setup, noting the importance of adaptability under different coaching methods.

“Every coach has their style and tactical play. What you were taught by your previous coach could be different, but as a player you need to follow the instructions and put in your best every time,” he explained.

Despite the intense competition for the number one spot, Asare emphasized unity within the squad, stressing that team success must remain the priority.

“If the coach starts another goalkeeper, it doesn’t mean that because I’m the number one, I should be angry. We have to stay prayerful and united for collective success.”

With the friendly against Wales serving as one of the final opportunities to impress, Asare and his fellow goalkeepers understand that every performance will be closely evaluated.

Ghana will begin their World Cup Group L campaign against Panama on June 17, and Asare says his ultimate goal is to prove his value, earn national trust, and help the Black Stars achieve success on football’s biggest stage.
