Ghana’s Black Queens will begin their quest to return to the FIFA Women’s World Cup with a crucial opening clash against Ecuador in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Play-Off Tournament.
The six-team play-off tournament is scheduled to take place from November 24 to December 5, with the participating nations battling for just two places in the final phase of the qualification process.
Ghana’s opening fixture against Ecuador will be followed by a second group match against either Uzbekistan or Chinese Taipei before the Black Queens conclude the group phase against Papua New Guinea.
The fixtures have set up a demanding path for Ghana, with every match carrying significant consequences in the race for qualification.

The Black Queens secured their place in the play-off tournament after defeating Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in the WAFCON 2026 play-in round. The victory kept Ghana’s World Cup hopes alive following their quarter-final elimination at the hands of Malawi.
With only two qualification places available from the six-team play-off tournament, Ghana will have little room for error. The Black Queens must finish among the top two teams in their group to advance to the final phase.
The final phase will present another major hurdle, as qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be decided by a single knockout match. Victory in that decisive encounter would secure Ghana’s return to the global tournament for the first time since 2007.
The opening match against Ecuador will therefore be particularly important for the Black Queens. A positive result could provide the team with the momentum needed to navigate the remaining fixtures, while a defeat would immediately increase the pressure on the squad.
The final group encounter against Papua New Guinea could also prove decisive, depending on the results of the earlier matches.
Head coach and players will now have to prepare carefully for what promises to be a high-pressure campaign. With Ghana seeking to end a long absence from the Women’s World Cup, the Black Queens know that every goal, point and performance could determine whether they finally return to the biggest stage in women’s football.
The road to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup begins against Ecuador, with Ghana’s hopes of ending a 20-year wait resting on a strong performance throughout the play-off tournament.
