USM Alger has taken a significant stride towards securing their first-ever continental club competition title after defeating Young Africans of Tanzania 2-1 in the first leg of the African Confederation Cup final on Sunday.
The Algerian club seized the lead in the 32nd minute when Aimen Mahious headed home a cleverly chipped free kick, silencing the 50,000-strong home crowd who were supporting the Tanzanian side.
However, the home fans found their voice again in the 82nd minute when Fiston Mayele produced a stunning equalizer with an impressive around-the-corner half volley, leveling the scores and reigniting hope for Young Africans.
Just two minutes later, a defensive error proved costly for the Tanzanian team as Islam Merili capitalized on the opportunity, calmly finishing from close range to give USM Alger a significant advantage heading into the second leg in Algiers next Saturday.
Despite the rainy conditions, the North African team displayed their physical strength and tactical control throughout the match. With the backing of their passionate supporters, they are now heavily favored to secure victory in front of their home crowd in the return leg.
Young Africans’ performance in this competition offers a rare opportunity for success in continental club competitions for East African football. In the past 60 years, the region has only celebrated a single title, won by Kenya’s Gor Mahia in the old-style African Cup Winners’ Cup 36 years ago. Other attempts from clubs in the region have fallen short.
For Young Africans to claim the trophy, they will need to secure a victory by a margin of at least two clear goals in the away leg.
Similarly, USM Alger is also chasing their maiden continental title. Their closest attempt came eight years ago when they finished as runners-up in the Champions League, falling to TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final.
The stage is set for an intense second leg as both teams strive to etch their names in African club football history.
