The brother of Union Berlin defender Derrick Kohn has debunked widespread claims that issues connected to a nationality switch led to his omission from Ghana’s preliminary World Cup squad.
German-born Kohn was left out of the 28-man squad named by Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz for the pre-World Cup friendly against Wales on June 2. The final 26-man squad for the tournament will be announced on June 1.
Koln’s omission came as a surprise to many, especially after he featured in Ghana’s friendly defeat to Germany.
Ace left-backs Baba Rahman and Gideon Mensah were selected ahead of the Union Berlin defender, with reports suggesting an incomplete nationality switch from Germany to Ghana was the reason for his exclusion.
However, in a social media post, Derrick’s brother, Michel Koln, moved to clear the air.
“JUST TO CLEAR UP THE RUMOURS: Derrick’s nationality switch is completed! The reasons for his exclusion can only be explained by the Ghana Football Association and Mr Carlos Queiroz,” Michel wrote.
The 27-year-old enjoyed a solid 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign, making 29 appearances for Union Berlin and registering one goal and two assists. Despite his form and completed switch, he was not included in Queiroz’s plans.
The mystery behind his omission remains unresolved, with the GFA and the coach yet to provide an explanation. For now, Kohn will watch the World Cup from home as Ghana prepare for Group L clashes against Panama, England, and Croatia.
