According to former Ghanaian midfielder David Accam, the early elimination of the Black Stars from the 2022 World Cup can be attributed to a lack of preparation.
Despite impressively qualifying against Nigeria in the playoffs, the team faced group-stage elimination, finishing at the bottom of Group H.
Their campaign began with a defeat against Portugal, followed by a hard-fought victory against South Korea. In the final group game, they needed a draw to advance to the next round, but suffered a 2-0 defeat against Uruguay, ending their journey in the tournament held in Qatar.
Accam emphasized the importance of sufficient preparation, stating, “We just didn’t prepare enough. I can say we were not ready,” he told Joy Sports.
“I think the lesson I learned was that we always have to be prepared,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars recently discovered their group for the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They have been drawn in Group I alongside Mali, Madagascar, Chad, Central African Republic, and Comoros.
This provides a new opportunity for Ghana to excel on the global stage, and hopefully, they will apply the lessons learned from previous competitions to make a strong impact in the upcoming event.
