Incensed Asante Kotoko fans took matters into their own hands on Sunday afternoon, causing damage to their section of the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in response to a controversial referee decision during their 2-2 draw with Nations FC.
The Kotoko supporters began throwing bottles onto the pitch when the referee, Abdul Latif Qadir, awarded the home team a penalty in stoppage time while Kotoko was leading 2-1. This outburst by the fans led to a temporary suspension of the match. To defuse the situation, Kotoko manager Prosper Ogum Narteh and several team officials had to intervene and calm the fans, who eventually stopped throwing objects to allow the penalty to be taken at their end of the field.
The irate fans didn’t stop at just throwing objects; they also uprooted the seats in the away stand.
However, Dr. Kwame Kyei, the former board chairman and owner of the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex, called for a ceasefire and urged unity among the fans. He pointed out that the stadium belongs to Kotoko and that the fans had damaged their own property.
Dr. Kyei stated that he wouldn’t hold the Porcupines responsible for the damages but would cover the cost of the broken chairs. He also advised fans to learn from the May 9th disaster.
As of now, Asante Kotoko has not released an official statement condemning the actions of their fans.
