Ghanaian international Ernest Nuamah is expected to be sidelined for an extended period after sustaining a severe cruciate ligament injury during Olympique Lyon’s Ligue 1 match against Lille on Saturday.
The incident occurred just five minutes into the game, following a ground challenge with Lille defender Gabriel Gudmundsson. Nuamah came out worse from the encounter and had to be taken off early, with Ryan Cherki stepping in as his replacement.
Despite Lyon securing a 2-1 win, the mood around the club was dampened by the concerning injury to their dynamic winger.
Initial medical evaluations suggest Nuamah could be out of action for anywhere between six months to a year, depending on the extent of the ligament damage and how well he responds to treatment and rehabilitation.
A partial tear of the ligament might heal with non-surgical treatment over six to nine months. However, in the case of a complete rupture requiring surgery, recovery could extend to a full year or more. In rare cases, full fitness may take up to two years if complications occur during rehabilitation.
Nuamah’s absence is a significant setback for both Lyon and the Ghana national team. Known for his speed, flair, and relentless work ethic, the 21-year-old has become a key figure for both club and country.
As he embarks on his recovery journey, support is pouring in from fans, teammates, and the wider football community, all hoping to see him return stronger and better in the future.
