English Championship side Hull City have emerged as one of the clubs interested in signing Ghana international Jerome Opoku from Turkish Super Lig outfit Istanbul Basaksehir during the summer transfer window, SportsWorldGhana.com can exclusively report.
The 27-year-old centre-back has enhanced his reputation following an impressive campaign for both club and country, attracting interest from several teams across Europe after establishing himself as one of Ghana’s most dependable defenders.
Opoku was among the Black Stars’ standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, delivering composed displays in the heart of defence as Ghana reached the Round of 32 before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
His performances on football’s biggest stage have further boosted his market value, with Hull City reportedly monitoring his situation as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season.
Although Istanbul Basaksehir are under no immediate pressure to sell, Opoku’s contract situation could prove decisive in the coming weeks.
The former Fulham defender has just one year remaining on his current deal with the Turkish club, a situation that could force Basaksehir to consider offers this summer rather than risk losing him on a free transfer when his contract expires in 2027.
According to reports, the Turkish outfit value the Ghanaian defender at around €8 million and are expected to negotiate only if that valuation is met.
While Transfermarkt estimates Opoku’s market value at approximately €5 million, Basaksehir are believed to be holding out for a significantly higher fee due to his importance to the squad.
Financial terms are also expected to play a major role in determining Opoku’s future.
The Ghana international reportedly earns around €310,000 per year in Turkey and is understood to be seeking improved personal terms before agreeing to leave Istanbul Basaksehir.
Hull City are believed to be capable of offering a more lucrative package than his current salary if they decide to formalise their interest.
Italian Serie A side Como, managed by former Spain international Cesc Fàbregas, are also reportedly prepared to improve the defender’s wages, making them one of Hull City’s main competitors in the race for his signature.
Opoku’s stock has risen considerably following his performances for the Black Stars at the FIFA World Cup.
The composed defender impressed with his positioning, aerial dominance and calmness in possession, earning praise despite Ghana’s Round of 32 exit.
His displays under former Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz have strengthened his reputation as one of Ghana’s most reliable defenders and increased interest from clubs seeking an experienced yet affordable central defender.
Hull City continue to assess options in the transfer market as they aim to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion back to the Premier League.
Adding a defender of Opoku’s quality and international experience would represent a significant statement of intent, although the Tigers are expected to face stiff competition from clubs across Europe.
With his contract entering its final year and interest continuing to grow following his impressive World Cup campaign, Jerome Opoku’s future is likely to be one of the transfer stories to watch in the coming weeks.
