Experienced German coach Winfried Schafer has signaled his interest in coaching the Black Stars of Ghana following the dismissal of Chris Hughton.
Hughton, an Irish-Ghanaian, was sacked after Ghana’s lackluster performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, leading to an early exit at the group stage in Cote d’Ivoire.
The four-time African champions struggled in all three group games, culminating in a final match collapse, surrendering a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 and exit the tournament.
Sources from Sportsworldghana reveal that Winfried Schafer, a veteran tactician who guided Cameroon to AFCON triumph in 2002, is keen on coaching Ghana.
Schafer, who has managed clubs like Stuggart, Karlsruher, FC Baku, Al Ahli, and Al Ain, as well as national teams like Thailand and Jamaica, plans to submit his application for the vacant position.
Currently serving as the head coach of Iranian club Sanat Naft Abadan FC, Schafer brings a wealth of experience to the table.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has set a three-week deadline for the search committee to find Hughton’s replacement, and Schafer emerges as a noteworthy candidate with his impressive coaching background.
The Black Stars are in search of a fresh start, and Schafer’s reputation as a disciplined coach could provide the impetus needed to maximize the potential of the talented players.
