The Member of Parliament for Berekum West Constituency, Dickson Kyere Duah, has thrown his support behind calls for Ghana Premier League matches to be hosted only at high-standard venues, even if it means reducing the number of host stadiums to just five or six.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, Kyere Duah emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and infrastructure standards following the recent resumption of the league. The competition had been suspended for several weeks after the tragic death of Kumasi Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Pooley Frimpong at Nsoatreman FC’s home venue.
“Only Safe and Properly Equipped Venues Should Host Matches”
The MP strongly advocated for stricter enforcement of stadium safety regulations, stressing that only venues that meet essential security and infrastructure standards should be approved for hosting league games.
“Facilities that are not fit for purpose should not be allowed to host matches. When you are talking about security, the stadium architecture, the structure also contributes to security on its own, so if you have stadia facilities that are not fit for purpose, the rules should not be bent,” he stated.
He further suggested that teams should be required to relocate to approved stadiums if their home grounds do not meet the necessary criteria.
“If we have 18 Premier League clubs and only six, seven, or eight venues are fit for purpose, other teams should be compelled to move to such facilities. These are issues we need to enforce.”
League Standings Update
As the Ghana Premier League continues, Asante Kotoko currently lead the standings with 42 points, holding a narrow one-point advantage over arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak.
