Kudjoe Fianoo, Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), has expressed strong concerns about the current state of Ghana football, citing that the country’s game is in disarray due to the “family and friends” system being practiced within the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Fianoo’s comments come on the heels of the Black Stars’ poor performances in the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The four-time African champions suffered a 2-0 defeat to Sudan in their most recent match, leaving them winless in their first four qualifiers and sitting fourth in Group F with just two points.
According to Fianoo, Ghana’s qualification chances now appear slim, and he alleges that the GFA’s leadership is focused on personal gains rather than the improvement of football in the country.
“Ghana football, in its entirety, is in a mess,” Fianoo said. “We haven’t seen anything yet if the FA continues with this family and friends system—this is what we’ll keep getting. These individuals came solely to benefit themselves, not to improve our game.”
Fianoo further stressed that real change can only come when those in charge are held accountable. “Things can only change if we all stop the ‘yes sir, master’ approach and speak the truth to authority,” he added.
The Black Stars will return to action next month as they face Angola and Niger to conclude their 2025 AFCON qualifying campaign, hoping to turn things around and keep their qualification hopes alive.
