Former Ghana gaffer James Kwasi Appiah is hopeful about the Black Stars chances ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup despite being paired in a tricky group.
The Black Stars have been housed in Group H against Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea in a draw that was held in Doha, Qatar last Friday.
Speaking on Accra-based Starr FM, the former Black Stars captain said it is unfortunate Ghana didn’t perform at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations but noted with the right decisions, the Black Stars can qualify from the group.
“We should be asking ourselves questions. Can we qualify from this group? If we can, what’s next? This is where it becomes tough. We should psyche ourselves that no matter who we play, we can beat them and will qualify from this group,” he said on Accra based Starr FM.
“The most important thing is to have visuals of our opponents to determine their tactical play. That’s one way of having an advantage over them. It’s unfortunate we didn’t have a good tournament in Cameroon (AFCON 2021), however with the right decisions I’m convinced we will qualify,” Appiah who coached Ghana in Brazil 2014 added.
“We’ve got some time before the World Cup. This is the time to move the team forward and prepare well. For me, I think all the teams are beatable and we can go through easily but the most important thing is the preparations towards each game”, he concluded.
The Black Stars will play Portugal in the opening game of the Group before facing Asian giants South Korea in the next group game
The four-time African Champions will wrap up their group campaign with a clash against the first ever winners of the Mundial in 1930, Uruguay.
Ghana is making its fourth appearance at the Mundial after participating in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 editions.
The West African powerhouse returned to the World Cup on Tuesday after eliminating regional rivals Nigeria, advancing on away goal advantage.
The Mundial is scheduled to take place in Qatar from 21 November to 18 December 2022 across five cities.
