Ghanaian forward David Atanga played a pivotal role in Wolfsberger AC’s stunning comeback victory in the Austrian Bundesliga on Saturday, scoring as they overturned a three-goal deficit to defeat Grazer AK 4-3 at the Merkur-Arena.
Grazer AK dominated the first half, with Daniel Maderner opening the scoring in the 8th minute. Maderner then assisted Slovenian midfielder Tio Cipot for the second goal just three minutes later. Marco Gantschnig added a third before halftime, leaving Wolfsberger with a mountain to climb.
Atanga entered the match in the 64th minute, replacing Dejan Zukic, and made an immediate impact. He scored from the penalty spot in the 80th minute to spark Wolfsberger’s revival.
Austrian forward Angelo Gattermayer struck three minutes later to narrow the gap further, and an own goal by Michael Lang in added time brought the scores level. The dramatic turnaround was completed when Gattermayer netted again deep into stoppage time, latching onto a pass from defender Nicolas Wimmer to secure the victory.
Former WAFA SC player Emmanuel Agyeman also featured, coming on at the start of the second half to replace Thierno Ballo.
Atanga has now scored three goals and provided one assist in 11 appearances for Wolfsberger this season, underlining his value to the team.
