Ghanaian winger Frank Acheampong received a red card in Henan FC’s 1-1 draw with Nantong Zhiyun FC in the Chinese Super League.
Acheampong received his marching orders two minutes before full-time after referee Gao Peng, following a VAR recommendation, conducted an ‘on-field review.’ The attacker unintentionally hit a Nantong player with his right hand while attempting to break forward from the left side of the centre circle.
The controversial dismissal forced Henan to fight through the closing minutes with 10 men. Acheampong, who has been in fine form this season with three goals and two assists in 20 appearances, will now miss several crucial matches for Henan, including a Chinese FA Cup quarter-final clash.
His absence is a significant blow for the team as they navigate this challenging period. The draw leaves Henan in a precarious position in the league standings, and Acheampong’s suspension adds to their woes.
The Ghanaian winger joined Henan earlier this year on a free transfer from Shenzhen FC, where he had been playing since 2021. His experience and contributions on the field have been invaluable, making his absence even more impactful.
Henan will need to regroup quickly and find a way to cope without their star winger in the upcoming fixtures. The team’s resilience will be tested as they strive to improve their standing in the league and advance in the FA Cup.
