1. Prosper Narteh Ogum at 70 with Fabulous
It was a great day in Obuasi as it promised. The build up to the Kotoko’s opening home game of the season had all the hype, attention and the deserved coverage by the media. The excitement was surreal until Daniel Lomotey put the visitors ahead early in the second half. Another exciting moment in the afternoon was Prosper Ogum’s 70th game as head coach for Asante Kotoko in two spells. He won the league in his first stint and his return last season was very calamitous. In his third year for Fabulous, Prosper has managed 70 matches, 34 games have been won, 18 draws and 18 defeats have been recorded. 85 goals have been scored, 50 conceded and an incredible 120 points have been amassed culminating in a Premier League title. The promising day ended in disappointment as Kotoko could only draw 1-1 agaisnt the new boys.
2. Aboubakar Ouattara smiles, Phobia family smile
The supporters washed the players with cash after the 2-0 win against Bechem United at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon on Sunday night. After a disastrous start to the season, almost all the Accra Hearts of Oak fans had wanted Ouattara out because they did not take the defeats against Holy Stars and Heart of Lions lightly. It was all or nothing for the Ivorian tactician Aboubakar Ouattara. After Hamza Issah doubled Phobia’s lead, Ouattara smiled signalling his happiness with the 2-0 win. Hearts of Oak fans celebrated immensely becaise the win they have prayed for was recorded. They now have to prepare for a trip to Nations FC in Week 4.
3. Nations FC record a superb win in Dormaa to ease the pressure on Kasim Mingle
Nations FC became title contenders last season after winning 4 straight games between March and April. They went 5 straight games without a win, they next defeated Accra Lions 1-0 and that was the end of their season. They officially became pretenders after failing to win any of the last 6 games of the seaon. Nations commenced the new season with two draws against Bechem United and Young Apostles. In Week 3, the Abrankese-based club snatched a late win at Dormaa Ahenkro against Aduana Stars to ease the rumuors on Kasim Ocansey Mingle and Johnson Smith’s sacking. It was a win they needed at all cost to boost their confidence and morale ahead of the visit of Hearts of Oak.
4. The Dun’s Park magic continues for Bibiani Gold Stars
Every team is looking for that one place they could even close their eyes and beat their opponents. Bibiani Gold Stars’ Dun’s Park is the most fearful venue now in the GPL since Frimpong Manso replaced Micheal Osei after losing 2-1 against Maxwell Konadu’s Nsoatreman in March. After 12 games at the venue, Gold Stars has won 11 and drawn 1. Over the weekend against Holy Stars, Frank Amankwah’s 76th minute strike was able to finally break down the resistance of the new boys. 2nd on the table now after winning 2 home games, Gold Stars’ home performance will give them a massive advantage.
5. Heart of Lions is now fearless
The changes Bashir Hayford has brought to Heart of Lions ought to be talked about. How did he do it? What’s the clue? Is he a magician?
No way anyone who witnessed Heart of Lions under Salifu last season will even given them the chance to survive becase they were horrible and afraid of anything in the league. Legendary Bashir Hayford was appointed as the head coach of th team and he has performed beyond expectations. Heart of Lions was leading 2-1 against Dreams until Joseph Esso equalised in the 88th minute over the weekend. At Dormaa in Week 1, Aduana equalised in the 95th minute in the 1-1 draw and it shows the level they have reached. The fearlessness in the team is extremely unbelievable because they have tested themselves against some of the good sides.
