Ghanaian midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh’s return to competitive football remains uncertain as SC Freiburg coach Julian Schuster confirms the 28-year-old still needs more time to regain full fitness.
Kyereh has been sidelined since suffering a cruciate ligament tear nearly two years ago, and his recovery has proven to be a prolonged process. Speaking during a press conference ahead of Freiburg’s clash with Hoffenheim, Schuster provided an update on the player’s situation.
“Kofi still has a way to go,” Schuster said. “When you’re out for a long time, it’s all about general fitness. His recovery has shown positive signs, but it’s a process that varies for every individual.”
Kyereh joined Freiburg on June 27, 2022, and made an impressive start, scoring his first Bundesliga goal against Mainz on October 1, 2022. He followed that with a Europa League goal just five days later in a group-stage win over FC Nantes. Unfortunately, his momentum was halted by the career-threatening injury.
Schuster acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Kyereh’s return: “Due to the length of the injury, it’s difficult to name a time frame. We need to remain patient and allow him to recover fully.”
Kyereh’s extended absence has been a blow for both Freiburg and Ghana, but hopes remain high for his eventual comeback.
