Asante Kotoko forward Kwame Opoku has expressed deep admiration for former teammate Fabio Gama, attributing much of his success during his first stint at the club to the Brazilian midfielder.
Poku and Gama formed a dynamic partnership during the 2020/21 season, helping the Porcupine Warriors secure the Ghana Premier League title. During that campaign, Opoku netted six goals in 16 appearances, with Gama playing a crucial role in providing assists for many of those goals.
Now back at Kotoko for a second stint, Poku spoke fondly of Gama, saying that the Brazilian’s impact on his career remains unforgettable.
“Fabio Gama is an exceptional player. He may be small in stature, but his intelligence on the pitch is immense. I really missed playing with him, as he was the one assisting most of my goals during my first time at Kotoko. He will always be in my heart,” Opoku said.
The 27-year-old forward rejoined Kotoko on a two-and-a-half-year contract, marking his return after a period of playing abroad. Poku’s previous stints in Algeria with USM Alger and in Morocco with Olympique Khouribga were less successful.
In Algeria, Opoku made a strong start before his move to Morocco, where a troublesome knee injury hindered his playing time, and he was later released following Khouribga’s relegation from the top division.
With Opoku back at Kotoko, the forward will be hoping to recapture the form that made him a key player during his first tenure at the club, as the Porcupine Warriors aim to regain their league dominance.
